The internal remodeling and rooftop addition to a 1720’s terraced house in Clerkenwell.
A new stair up to the roof terrace features rooflights above and adjacent, drawing light through the stairwell at the center of each floor. A number of roof forms were tested when developing a language for the new rooftop stair enclosure. Beginning with a simple glass box sitting as an expressed element on the roof deck, before introducing sloped planes to break down the massing. The final design was informed by the angle of the Dutch mansard, allowing it to be a concealed and secluded terrace.
