Christian Street

Community Centre

London, United Kingdom

2017–2018

Client: London Borough of Tower Hamlets

A new community centre for the London borough of Tower Hamlets. Located on the ground floor of a residential block, the existing facility was originally a set of small, congested offices, with suspended ceilings and little natural light. Providing more light, more space and more flexibility drove the design of the refurbishment, creating a simple sequence of quiet yet robust communal rooms.

Six new openings into the central space allow light deeper into the building, where a new cafe sits encouraging natural cross-over of the occupants. A bespoke joinery piece houses the kitchen area, forming a service counter and integrated seating. The new main entrance to the cafe in the northern facade gives the building a more legible entrance whilst creating a stronger connection to the children’s play area.
