Located in East London, the Grade II listed art-Deco former cine theatre building has been through a number of uses since it was originally built. First built in 1933 as a ‘super cinema’ it was converted to a practice space for the Royal Opera House in 1962, then used as a Bingo Hall during the 1980s-90s. Now run as a successful multi-purpose events and live music venue since 2006, the building finds itself in an architectural purgatory. Fortunately, the current owners have started a programme of works to unpick previous insensitive changes and reinstate or reveal lost heritage. The project(s) look to refurbish the existing building in a series of controlled phases undertaking both urgent life safety measures and technical upgrades, whilst also improving the functionality and capacity of the venue and secure its long term future through new amenity.

The projects are ongoing, and the sequencing of the works allows for the delivery of all elements whilst maximising the building’s current uses and minimising disruption to its operation. Phase 1 was initiated through securing ACE/DCMS funding for building improvements in response to Covid providing a reconfigured foyer, new toilets, overhauled ventilation and was all undertaken in a working building, whilst phase 2 included reinstating the stage-house (including new stage position and wings), revealing the fly-tower and reconfiguring the get-in and toilets.

Phase 3 is ongoing and looks to provide a new hotel extension to the rear of the site alongside making enhancements  to the external façades of the existing building including restoration of the ornate front façade, entrance canopy and doors, and revealing the original double-height foyer space, services upgrades and dressing room reconfigurations
