Hillside Cottage
On Site, October 2018

Located within Cornwall’s world heritage site the scheme extends a small miners cottage on a steep hill overlooking the sea. Designed in collaboration with RA Studio the proposal forms a single storey contemporary barn in the woods behind the existing cottage. The two volumes exploit the extremities of the site to connect and form a homogeneous element whilst retaining the delicate scale of a cottage typology.

Clad in charred timber the new barn remains ancillary in appearance, but forms the main living spaces within. The existing cottage becomes the bedrooms. Externally, a long dry-stone wall allows small amounts of terracing to the landscape, creating a number of intimate spaces with unique views across the bay. At the base of the site, a contemporary pool house is dug into the hillside concealed by the existing vegetation.

The project started on site in October 2018
