Tower Hamlets Town Hall

Old London Hospital

Whitechapel, London, United Kingdom

2014 – Present

Client: London Borough of Tower Hamlets

Status: RIBA Stage 5

The refurbishment and extension to the 18th century Grade II listed former hospital on Whitechapel Road. The building will form the new Town Hall for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets consolidating a number of the councils offices into a single location and offer a wide range of public services to the local residents.

The existing former hospital building will house a range of meeting facilities for council staff and public engagement spaces including a new ideas store, cafe and reception facilities. The new build extension will provide open plan office accommodation at the upper levels whilst at ground level a new council chamber and associated meeting facilities will form the borough’s democratic focus.

ICA completed the feasibility study for the site in 2014 and the project has since been progressed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris. ICA are acting as Design Guardians on the project, working alongside the Council’s team in delivering the project with AHMM. Preliminary works have commenced on site and the project is expected to be completed in 2021.
