The Southeast London borough of Lewisham had a deficiency of outdoor play space for under 5s.
After spotting a portion of unused land on the edge of Blackheath Common in 2019, we worked with local community groups and Lewisham Council to create a long-term vision and commit to delivering it.
The site was an unassuming area of grassland on the south side of Blackheath Common, sandwiched between a 1970s brick wall and a line of mature trees which screened it from the open heath.
Working with Friends of Blackheath Play Area, we created proposals for meanwhile and long-term use, kickstarting a campaign which resulted in funding from the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy.
In response to community feedback, we designed the play area as an exploratory, undulating natural landscape using fallen tree habitats from Greenwich Park and harvested grass and flower seeds from the heath.
Traction was gained with Lewisham Council following a 5-year process – including public exhibitions, talks and surveys - with continuous support from ICA and engagement of local groups like the Blackheath Society.
Having gained planning permission in March 2023, development is underway in phases as funding is secured.
Talbot Place Community Garden is already a much loved and frequented place for the local community, and a popular gathering space during events like the annual Kite Festival.
The success of this project shows the potential of architects and community groups working together to recognise potential and enact positive change in their area.
