When council staff were relocated from the Camden Town Hall Annex to Pancras Square in 2013, they left behind a brutalist structure in a prominent location opposite the Grade I listed St Pancras Station.
Finding renewed relevance for the purpose-built 1974 building was essential, as was preserving its original distinctive concrete frame.

Whilst at Orms Architects, members of Ian Chalk Architects developed proposals to retain the building’s concrete curved bays and create a bold rooftop addition to become The Standard’s first hotel in London.
Converting the former council offices into hotel spaces meant celebrating the existing precast concrete frame inside and out, and carefully inserting additional steel columns to support a new three storey extension on the roof.
When Ian Chalk Architects was founded in 2014, we were retained as design consultants to collaborate with the Orms team up to planning – which was granted in 2015.

With the support of English Heritage and Camden Council, the scheme was built by Orms Architects in collaboration with Archer Humphryes and Shawn Hausman Design.
The ambitious retrofit and extension of The Standard went on to win multiple awards including national awards from RIBA and the Civic Trust.
