Troxy is a Grade II listed former cinema which has been part of Stepney’s cultural landscape since 1933. Following its heyday, the richly decorated building has been subjected to a series of unsympathetic alterations as it was repurposed as a rehearsal space, bingo hall and live music venue.
Having worked with the owners on previous phases of restoration to reinstate the stage house - increasing the scale of type of events - and undertake essential upgrades, our latest application will complete the transformation.
Our proposals aim to revive the original venue and introduce a contemporary hotel to complement the Art Deco building.
Upgrades are designed to reveal and reinstate lost heritage aspects including a richly decorated double height entrance foyer, the Art Deco external canopy and ornate façade on Commercial Road.
A new café and community space is planned on the ground floor, while behind the scenes a series of technical upgrades and a reconfiguration of back of house spaces.
To the rear, a highly engineered and sustainable new hotel building is proposed as a book end to the site. Elevations are expressed in pale brick, using relief and pattern to anchor the hotel in its Conservation Area setting and complement the original Art Deco building. Internally, layouts follow a regular arrangement with room plans repeated throughout the upper floors.
At a time when UK theatre venues are in decline, this scheme would return to full glory the London Borough of Tower Hamlet’s only major venue and secure its future as a key anchor for the area’s evening economy, where it’s estimated to contribute £2m to local businesses.
“This phase of work by Ian Chalk Architects will support The Troxy’s operations and secure its future. As the only major venue in Tower Hamlets and a key anchor in the local economy, we’re excited for this new chapter.”
Mohit and Deepak Sharma,
Owners of Troxy
