As part of our mixed-use Tin Pan Alley project – reviving a cluster of heritage buildings – we worked with Soho Housing Association to provide affordable housing on the site.
The land-locked plot had a series of small industrial warehouses tightly packed around a cobbled courtyard. Our aim was to provide as many homes as possible from the existing buildings.

The densely packed urban fabric meant we had to think carefully about balancing resident overlooking with establishing a sense of community and sociability.
After stripping out old services and unnecessary additions, we developed an efficient plan to carve out seven homes for between two to four people.
Lightwells were introduced to draw natural light into even the deepest parts of the plan, and living spaces were designed to protect privacy for residents.
We added an external staircase to connect the central courtyard to upper floors, creating moments for resident interaction, as well as freeing up internal space previously used for circulation.

The challenging nature of the site, as well the constraints of working with historic industrial buildings, demanded a sensitive approach to the retained heritage and future function of the warehouses as homes.
Through careful articulation of space and light, the designs have provided characterful homes within a proximity of living often eschewed.
Endell Street was highly commended in the 2017 Camden Design Awards.
