We have spent the past decade creating and delivering a long-term vision for the remarkable heritage area of Tin Pan Alley, including sensitive historic building repairs and a series of contemporary interventions.
Drawing on the buildings’ strong musical heritage – including the Rolling Stones recording their first album and The Beatles signing their first record contract – we worked to establish a mix of complimentary uses across the constrained site.
The site presented five Grade II and II* listed 17th century houses, a mansion block and three historic warehouses all within Camden’s Denmark Street Conservation Area.
We started with painstaking research to unpick years of incremental alterations and reveal original configurations and details. This process of editing and removing unsympathetic additions created space for new interventions to be discreetly stitched into the urban fabric.
Listed townhouses were meticulously restored and replanned to offer unique heritage hospitality spaces, with restaurant and retail uses retained at ground level.
Warehouse buildings were refurbished and extended to offer seven affordable homes [Endell St] around a characterful courtyard.
Contemporary volumes were designed to fit the geometry of their respective hosts, resulting in a new collection of highly crafted spaces including a 300-person arts and music venue.
This long-term project required the dexterity to work between contrasting scales to establish a site wide approach to conservation, sustainability and renewal.
Through detailed research and investigations, we were able to attribute the best use for each building and carve out valuable spaces supporting a variety of activity.
Restoring the historically significant buildings has afforded them renewed relevance and ensured that the musical heritage of Tin Pan Alley continues into the 21st century.
