After being awarded OFSTED Outstanding, the John Ball School were keen to respond to feedback to improve their sports offering.
Set on a steeply sloping woodland site in Blackheath, the school had limited options to develop within their grounds.
However, the opportunity to not only improve their sports facilities but create an assembly space large enough for the 600-pupil school, was something they were keen to explore.
A large area was needed to meet Sports England compliance, which would allow the space to be rented to the wider community for local training and tournaments.
Following workshops with the school community, we proposed to expand the site of an existing Astroturf pitch and add a green powder-coated aluminium-clad sports hall.
At street level, the entrance is lowered to improve accessibility and enable an 8-metre-tall, 4 court pitch space suitable for a variety of sports, as well as storage, changing rooms and space for 70 spectators. A band of raised windows allows fresh air and daylight inside whilst protecting from pedestrian view.
Accessed via a bridge through the trees, a rooftop MUGA is provided solely for the school with an aluminium screen tapered towards the east elevation.
The structure is proposed as a sustainable hybrid steel portal frame with CLT infill, along with solar panels and centralised mechanical ventilation for heat recovery.
Working within complex site logistics, we were able to create a detailed feasibility for the school allowing them to present the proposal to the local council, Department for Education and Sports England – as well and cost and fundraise for the project.
Our proposal will improve the school’s own sports offer whilst giving them an important future revenue stream.
