With NHS beds under increasing pressure, we were tasked with establishing a healthcare provision which would act as a step down from full hospital care.
Located on an underused brownfield site near King’s Cross, the new building needed to aid the recovery of patients and encourage them back into everyday life within a safe and supported environment.

As a new five storey building, our architectural response was drawn from the early days of the NHS with a simple and methodical façade.
A white tiled elevation is interspersed with horizontal bands of green planters and angled bay windows to create moments of softness and detail.
Internally, a spacious central core leads to two wings of accommodation housing ward rooms and healthcare facilities.
Extensive consideration was given to the interaction of patients and staff with social spaces, roof terraces and generous views all enhancing recovery and wellbeing. In addition, private spaces were created as areas of rest and recuperation for patients and carers.

The Royal College Street project was granted planning permission in 2020, as a nurturing and supportive community of patients and staff.
The deliberately social nature of the spaces encourages interaction and builds confidence towards independent living for those recovering from ill health, whilst also providing the time and space for recuperation.
