About Us

Ian Chalk Architects works with private and public clients, community groups and individuals to give existing structures renewed purpose and introduce new buildings to challenging historic contexts.

Ian Chalk Architects work has been recognised through a number of architectural awards, including most recently winning RIBA Awards 2025 Building of the Year for Tower Hamlets Town Hall.

Ian Chalk Architects works on a wide range of projects for private, cultural and local authority clients. We are also fortunate to collaborate with a wide range of talented practices in order to get the best outcome for our projects.

Our experienced team is consciously small to offer the kind of relationships we enjoy most – personal, friendly and collaborative. We love welcoming clients to our studio as a space to explore and enjoy the process of design.

Rather than stamp our own ideas onto your project, we guide you to shape and refine your brief through our quiet methodology of research and analysis to form a continuous narrative.

Our Approach

Creative Re-use

Our approach to re-purposing buildings stems from a love of detailed research into what has come before; living and breathing existing spaces to help guide their future narratives.

We don’t shy away from knotty problems inherent to repurposing buildings, working diligently to provide creative and cost-effective solutions through consultation, planning and construction.

Honest:

As specialists in imaginative adaptations and heritage buildings, we’re naturally open minded. Our starting point is never a fixed idea about how your project should look. Designs come from respect for what already exists, a thorough understanding of your aspirations and consideration of how people will experience space.
